10 Habits of Successful Women In the Workplace

What does it mean to be a successful woman in the workplace? Is it achieving higher pay, starting your own business, becoming financially independent, or obtaining your dream position? In order to achieve being a successful woman in the workplace, you must define what success means to you.

A generally accepted idea of success is living a life that’s meaningful to you and continually growing in your profession as well as your personal life. If you’re looking to achieve these goals, taking on these 10 habits of successful women in the workplace will go a long way.

1. She Sets Goals & Prioritizes

“Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life.”

If you’ve ever heard someone say “she knows what she wants,” you’ve probably longed for that same recognition. Knowing what you want is a positive attribute that reflects having goals in your life. Successful women in the workplace have future goals that will propel them into success over and over again. Without goals, you really have no chance of being successful, because there’s nothing you’re striving for.

“A goal without a timeline is just a dream.”

As you set goals for your life or your job, it’s important to prioritize effectively. Doing the simplest tasks first is not always a great game plan. Try breaking up large tasks into smaller ones, so you can feel more accomplished when you’ve finished, and more motivated to move on to the next tasks. This is called streamlining your workflow. It helps you to stay stress-free and goal oriented.

2. She Is Organized

“For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.”

Organization is another helpful tool to keep you stress free and more productive. A clean atmosphere positively affects your mental health, keeping you in a better mood with a clearer mind. Effective organization will help you focus on your tasks and minimize confusion on what to do next or where things are. To stay organized, try keeping things in folders, naming all documents, and using a planner that allows you to physically cross-off completed tasks.

3. She Minimizes Distractions

“You can’t do big things if you’re distracted by small things.”

Minimizing distractions, yet knowing when to take breaks is an important habit of successful women in the workplace. Staying on track and focusing on your goals by limiting time spent on your phone, on the internet, playing with your pet, or catering to your kids, is necessary to achieving success. However, at least once an hour, it’s important to take a few minutes to relax or do another simple task that will help you recharge and get ready to take on more responsibilities. The more you get done in a  day, the better you’ll feel at the end of it.

4. She Perseveres

“Those who dare to fail miserably, can achieve greatly.”

We all make mistakes, we all experience failure, but a successful woman doesn’t just accept failure; she learns from it and tries again. It’s important not to let failure bring you down, but rather propel you further to reach your goals even faster. When you choose to be successful, you choose to not let failure stand in your way.

5. She Is Continually Learning

“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.”

The saying, “knowledge is power,” couldn’t ring more true in terms of being successful in life. Continually educating yourself on the topics of your goals will help you in an indefinite number of ways. You’ll gain a better understanding of how to do things, why things are done, what needs to be done, and the skills you need to be able to do them. Research different topics you’re interested in, or topics related to the area you want to be successful in, and don’t stop learning about them. Knowledge will never hurt you, but only help you grow.

6. She Takes Initiative

“Taking initiative pays off. It is hard to visualize someone as a leader if she is always waiting to be told what to do.”

Taking the phrase “I can’t” out of your vocabulary is the first step in taking initiative for your own benefit. Speak up when you have ideas, if things aren’t working correctly, change them, and constantly be looking to find solutions to problems. Taking initiative in the workplace characterizes you as a leader and helps you achieve success in your goals and your business’s goals.

7. She Listens & Communicates Effectively

“Communication is the key to successful relationships. Active listening is key to successful communication.”

The first step here is listening. Listening helps you to know and understand the needs of others. What is business if not catering to the needs of others. If you’re constantly speaking or focusing on other things, you won’t be able to cater to the needs of your clients and you won’t be successful. After you’ve listened, then you can communicate clearly and effectively. The key to good communication is confidence. Articulate your thoughts and ideas, and present them with your head high. Don’t be afraid of criticism, but use it to pivot your ideas to make an even bigger impression.

8. She Is Focused On Self-Improvement

“Promise me you’ll always remember: you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

Successful women in the workplace are constantly working on improving themselves from the inside out, not only at work, but in their personal lives as well. The personable attributes of a successful woman are being kind, generous, positive, empathetic, and compassionate. Being able to relate and resonate with others is crucial to achieving success.

9. She Challenges Herself

“Challenges are what make life interesting, and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”

If you’re comfortable in the monotony of your current day to day routine, you might think of yourself as already successful and not interested in gaining anything else. However, after a while, getting stuck in the same routine can actually push you backwards as the rest of the world is moving forward. New advances in technology make it almost impossible for you to stay in one place and continue being successful. It’s important to push your own boundaries and follow all the steps above to propel or maintain your success.

10. She Enjoys the Journey

“Find happiness by enjoying the journey, not by awaiting the destination.”

Last, but not least, take time to enjoy your journey to success. If every day you are better than you were yesterday, then it’s important to recognize your current successes. If you don’t know exactly where you are now, how will you ever know how far you’ve come? The good and bad days make up your story to success!
